This monograph offers the first-ever overview of the divine cults and heroes in the Western Peloponnesian countryside of Elis (excluding the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia) and next-door Triphylia, from the geometrical epoch to the mid-Roman empire.

The ancient sanctuary of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and of athletic competition in general, has been fascinating people from antiquity up to the present time. In the present volume, all inscriptions - large and small - published after Dittenberger's edition are collected, critically edited, translated into German, and commented. Complete Greek and Latin indices make the inscriptions easily accessible to all scholars interested in the ancient Olympic Games, in the history of religion and sports, and in classical studies in general. The sanctuary of Olympia has fascinated people from ancient times to the present day. We receive authentic information about its history and the course of the games held there from ancient writers such as Pausanias, through excavation finds and findings, but above all through the inscriptions found there. This publication now combines the texts published since 1896 and thus enables a complete overview of the epigraphic evidence on stone, metal and ceramics.

Where Dreams May Come was the winner of the 2018 Charles J . Goodwin Award of Merit, awarded by the Society for Classical Studies. In this book, Gil H. Renberg examines the ancient religious phenomenon of “incubation', the ritual of sleeping at a divinity’s sanctuary in order to obtain a prophetic or therapeutic dream. Most prominently associated with the Panhellenic healing god Asklepios, incubation was also practiced at the cult sites of numerous other divinities throughout the Greek world, but it is first known from ancient Near Eastern sources and was established in Pharaonic Egypt by the time of the Macedonian conquest; later, Christian worship came to include similar practices. Renberg’s exhaustive study represents the first attempt to collect and analyze the evidence for incubation from Sumerian to Byzantine and Merovingian times, thus making an important contribution to religious history. This set consists of two books.

"Bodhgayā has long been recognized as the place where the Buddha achieved enlightenment. This book brings together the recent work of twelve scholars from a variety of disciplines - anthropology, art history, history, and religion - to highlight their various findings and perspectives on different facets of Bodhgayā's past and present. Through an engaging and critical overview of the place of Buddha's enlightenment, the book discusses the dynamic and contested nature of this site, and looks at the tensions with the on-going efforts to define the place according to particular histories or identities. It addresses many aspects of Bodhgayā, from speculation about why the Buddha chose to sit beneath a tree in Bodhgayā, to the contemporary struggles over tourism development, education and non-government organizations, to bring to the foreground the site's longevity, reinvention and current complexity as a UNESCO World Heritage monument in the north Indian state of Bihar. The book is a useful contribution for students and scholars of Buddhism and South Asian Studies"--
